Casa Amarelo
Hotel Type: Hotel
Environment: City

Much of what we say for the Casa Amarelo can be taken straight from the Mama Ruisa (also in our selection). Both are located in the Bohemian district of Santa Teresa, a wonderful antidote to any preconceived views of Rio de Janeiro, which usually means sun, sea, carnival and Copacabana. In fact, much of this district is pure art nouveau – coffee shops, museums, art galleries and great restaurants included.
The touch of the old continent is actually everywhere. Both houses were built at the turn of the century by European architects and both have French owners. In this case it is the charming Matthieu Romancant. There is certain a European sophistication about the place, as evidenced by much of the cutting edge design, WIFI, IPod packs and decoration of the five, very ample, rooms.
Yet the Casa Amarelo is also quintessentially Brazilian. These touches go hand in hand with mid Brazilian artefacts from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s, bright colours used throughout and the great views of Rio in the background, which are simply unique. As you amble around the house the soothing tones of the Bossa Nova may even be playing in the background. The music doesn’t quite carry on into the garden with its great swimming pool and views. Instead you get the singing of countless birds with their own version of the Brazilian classics.
Rio is not known as the “Cidade Maravilhosa” (Marvellous City) for nothing. There’s no place quite like it and the centre is only some ten minutes away. Ipanema with its beaches and wild sunsets is fifteen minutes by car.
