Finca de las Salinas

The Finca de las Salinas is just what the doctor ordered if you what you are looking for is an excellent base from which to explore Lanzarote and Timanfaya National Park.

This 18th century mansion was initially acquired by Jaime Leo, a licensed pharmacist who exported the local salt (Salinas actually means salt beds) to other parts of the island and beyond. He certainly managed to give the las Salinas added taste, so to speak, for as you come to the simply beautiful whitewashed village of Yaiza there lies the Finca las Salinas, resplendent in all its colonial style glory.

Undoubtedly the house itself and the warmth it emanates is one of the highlights of a stay here, what with its polished architectural style, much of it alluding to the Arabesque, smooth ochre and white colourings to go with the salmon pink walls, double archways, exotic trees and decoration taking in well preserved antiques as well as designer furniture. Indeed, the Las Salinas may be centuries old but modern facilities or design is not lacking here. Look inside and there’s even contemporary art to be found under a glass dome.

There are also many pleasant surprises throughout, such as the rooms affording views of the lava fields or the fact that the terraces (each room has one, with great views to boot) are made of volcanic rock. The lovely swimming pool further offers wonderful panoramas of the surrounding countryside, much of which is reminiscent of the Moroccan landscapes, reminder, perhaps, that we are only 100 km from the coast of Africa.

All in all it adds up to a pretty impressive stay in what has been classified as one of the best rural hotels in Spain.
