The Hotel Abad de Toledo is a 19th century building that was thoroughly restored a few years ago. Once, during its past, it was a foundry like any of those we see all over the place in Toledo forging inlaid swords and other utensils – all based on the famous Toledo steel. We are right in the center of this historical town, very near to the Plaza de Zocodover, the Puerta del Sol and the Cristo de la Luz mosque. If you have arrived by car driving through those narrow winding streets it is because you have arranged with the hotel for a place to park – be warned!

Once inside, the lodging is modern, elegant and with a traditional architectural design: wooden beams, intricate woodwork and naked brick. Tapestries are based on soft orange and blue tones. The 22 bedrooms, including a suite, are comfortable although not too spacious – but we have to bear in mind that this is the millenary “Toletum” and prime real estate comes at a price.

Reception is open day and night. In the morning we can enjoy a hearty buffet breakfast – and there is a friendly bar where we can rest after climbing the hills of this classical city. It is impossible to inventory here the monuments that we may visit – best go to an Oficina de Turismo and let them inform you about this World Heritage Site, according to UNESCO. And face a difficult choice: which of so many marvels do we visit and which ones we don’t?
