Golmar 13

This is just about as far as you can go at the top of Spain! And Golmar 13 has what is arguably the best coastal view in the whole of the Iberian peninsular.

This fine old farmhouse, which dates back to the late 1700s, looks down over green fields, black cliffs, and 90km of shimmering coastline, all the way to the Sisargas Islands near Cape Finisterre. Inside, a sensitive restoration using local chestnut and stone has taken full advantage of the large open spaces and high ceilings. The comfortable drawing-rooms on each floor (one with open fire and books; the other with TV, internet, and music) take in the vast view, while the bedrooms are large, with comfortable beds and many original features.

The farmhouse kitchen conserves the original wood stove in the corner, but is now fully equipped and ideal for preparing feasts from the vast array of fish and shellfish on offer locally. It is a house that you don't want to leave, but there is much to explore here on Spain's northernmost tip: Europe's highest sea cliffs; an endless choice of beaches (take your pick from pounding surf to chestnut-fringed coves); fishing villages; sanctuaries; castles; Atlantic rainforests; and umpteen routes for hiking, biking, or paddling a kayak (many of these right from your front door).

If all this sounds too much like hard work, those comfortable sofas and inspirational views are beckoning. And there is even a separate games room with ping-pong table and darts, as well as a large garden, to ensure that the kids allow you to finish your book! Or just gaze through the telescope with the house's maps at hand (it's surprising how long that can take!).

The owner can help organise all sorts of activities, including bird watching, kayaking, surfing, fishing, sailing, and horse riding. There are also 3 mountain bikes at the house for guests.
