This restored monastery in the heart of the Rioja region dates back to 1711 when it formed part of the Dominicans’ Our Lady of Piety retreat.

The village of Casalarreina is in a wonderful position to take full advantage of the region’s vineries as well as easy access to stunning countryside and all manner of activities, adventurous and non.

The hotel now has 15 well-restored double rooms furnished in the true-to-origins rustic style with the addition of little colour in the form of scenic murals and wall paintings. There’s plenty of wooden floors, beams and pillars as well as solid stonework – as much of it as possible dating from the original construction to give a homely atmosphere without ever being overly modern and sterile.

Lots of character then and lots to do also in the region which, apart from the famous wines (and the hotel holds wine tasting events each weekend as well as tours to surrounding estates), is also one of the most beautiful in Spain with mountains rising over the 2000 metre mark. The rooms are spacious by Spanish standards and many have large Jacuzzi-style baths, a perfect way to relax after a hard day’s work trying the local produce in the many vineyards.
