Ca’n Reus is a comfortable, friendly and well located Majorcan hotel – a mansion that was created by Mr. Reus who made his fortune by exporting citric fruits from the Island to France during the 19th century. That helps explain the French elegance.

Each of the 8 bedrooms has been restored with loving care, featuring a design that is both modern and snug. Most of them have spectacular views of the surrounding mountains – we are after all in the middle of the Sierra de Tramontana. Breakfasts are quite delectable and generous – enough to keep us going all day exploring the beautiful nooks and corners of the environs. Good suppers where our hosts will surprise with some excellent local wines. We are in Fornalutx, next door to the more cosmopolitan town of Sóller and surrounded by orange and olive trees. This village was 1,000 years ago an “alquería” (small Muslim hamlet) and its cobbled lanes seem to have changed little since then.

It was awarded in 1983 by Fomento de Turismo de Mallorca with a Silver Plaque for the defence and maintenance of the village. Should we come during the “fiestas” of Fornalutx, it’s interesting to find that the ceremonies revolve around the ox (bou), an old tradition that was celebrated in antiquity and that the town has recuperated. Excellent place to practice trail hiking, with circular walks that can last from one to six hours amongst citric orchards that have not changed since Columbus discovered the Americas. The rooms consist of: Puig Maior: Suite offering comfort, elegance and romance, much favoured by honeymoon couples or by those who simply want to spoil themselves. A large four poster bed dominates the bedroom leading onto an en-suite bathroom and a small sitting room where the windows offer views of the mountains. Decorated meticulously in 19th century Mallorquin style with the original tiles still in place, "Puig Major" is named after the highest peak in the island and, we believe, it will fulfil your highest expectations. L’Ofre: On the top floor of the hotel and with French windows looking out onto the mountains. It provides spectacular views and comfort in equal measure. Twin beds can be separated or pushed together to make a double bed, as required. As with all the rooms in Ca'n Reus, there is an ensuite bathroom, prettily tiled, with a bath and shower. Alfabia: Alfabia is similar to L'Ofre, only very slightly smaller. It too has large windows and offers the opportunity to lie in bed and marvel at one of the best views on the island and the expanse of the Sierra de Tramuntana, the mountain range which faces Ca'n Reus. The beds are arranged similarly to L'Ofre and there is an en suite bathroom.

Tasteful decoration and paintings add to the attraction of this room. Sa Paisa: The garden room is also favoured by honeymoon couples and those who want complete privacy. Situated away from the main hotel building, in the garden and surrounded by bougainvillea it offers tranquility, space and views of the orange groves which lie beyond the hotel garden and of the mountains behind. Originally a stable, the bathroom has been ingeniously designed using the original mangers as washbasins. Ca ses Jaies: Ca ses Jaies offers a view of the mountains, It has a small sitting area with doors which open onto the terrace. The bedroom has a double bed and, more unusually, the trunk of a one hundred year old olive tree in one corner and ideal to hang your hat on! There is an ensuite bathroom although, because the bathroom has only a shower and no bathtub. Almallutx Even though the view is of the cobbled streets, for which Fornalutx is famous, this is one of the most attractive and spacious rooms in Ca'n Reus. Two good sized beds can be pushed together to make a double. An antique mahogany wardrobe and 19th century washbasin (decoration only!) add to the traditional style of the room. Elegant wood and glass doors lead to an ensuite bathroom. Almallutx leads onto the hotel "sala" with its comforting fire during winter and welcome cool in summer. Masanella Massanella combines cosiness with rustic charm.

An entire wall has been exposed to reveal the original stonework of this house which was built two hundred years ago. A comfortable double bed is draped with green nets (a decorative feature in winter, a mosquito precaution in summer) which gives the room a warm and romantic feel. Antique doors lead into an ensuite bathroom. At the top of the house, Massanella is cosy and warm in winter and, benefitting from the shade of the street, cool in summer. Sa Rateta Sa Rateta is one of the most versatile rooms in Ca'n Reus. Two twin beds can be pushed together to make a double or, separated by a bedside table, a comfortable twin bedded room. As with all rooms, there is a well equipped ensuite bathroom.

Decorated in bright yellow with colourful paintings, Sa Rateta is also popular as a children's bedroom. It shares a corridor with Puig Major and the two rooms make an ideal family unit. It is cheaper than the other rooms because it is slightly smaller.
