Relais de la Magdeleine

Some places aim to be classy and historic whilst never really achieving their goal and some are the real deal when it comes to old world style charm and refinement.

The Relais de la Magdeleine definitely belongs to the latter category. Everything about it oozes effortless bygone charm and even the little things that seem to be slightly off, such as wonky floorboards in some places, just adds to the quirkiness.

It has been in the hands of the Magdeleine family (hence the name) for generations and they sure know how to treat guests with exemplary French style.

The scene is set immediately as you drive through a park replete with hundred year old plane trees (already part of the estate) and eventually you arrive at a centuries old house. At your disposal is total peace, tranquillity beautiful surroundings and superb cuisine. It doesn’t matter what time of year you go.

Winter is perfect for taking a good book by the fireplace and just relaxing with a glass of wine in hand. The summer months are just the thing for chilling out in the verdant garden or by the pool.

Like the house itself, rooms ooze French charm and traditional romantic decor that almost seems to belong to another, more romantic age. Warm colours are the norm as are the Provence style floor tiles (some of which are perhaps wonky as mentioned but still really idiosyncratic).

In short, everything is discreetly charming at the Bastide Relais de la Magdeleine and it is a measure of the hotel’s pulling power that most guests tend to be return customers.

Difficult to find it may be, but also incredibly hard to leave.
