Mont Fleury is a lovely 18th century mansion converted into a Bed & Breakfast by Bob, an oriental airlines ex pilot.
This is a “malouinière” or a dwelling that 17th and 18th century shipowners built close to Saint-Malo (there’s about 120 of them) to be able to have more space than within town, but to be close enough for better protection against pirate attacks. The owner has refurbished four bedrooms – chambre Marine, chambre Orientale, chambre Chinoise and chambre Americaine – combining elements that were around when buccaneers roamed these parts, with facilities of this era such as TV, Internet connection or a HI-FI system music for total relaxation.
All this protected by thick walls that separate us from a park full of trees. Some of the sitting rooms face a garden where we can enjoy the sun or even organize a barbecue. The bedrooms, some of which are duplex, can accommodate up to four people. And one and half miles away we find Saint-Malo, a fortified Britton sea port that kept vigilance over the river Rance estuary, facing the Channel and “la perfide Albion”.
This is the land of corsairs and filibusters – and we can bring up the subject with the locals whilst eating in one of the dozens of excellent seafood restaurants that abound in this area.
