It’s a pleasure to welcome you, so said the brochure. Well, the pleasure is very much ours, given that for the price of an average stay in Nice, the Hotel Windsor manages to provide an ambience that is utterly welcoming - unlike some design hotels we could mention - oasis like and, above all, quirky.

The fairly bog standard 19th century facade might not actually give the game away, but this is definitely a hotel that wears its heart on its decorative sleeve, the twist coming from the fact that most of the 50 odd rooms have been individually decorated by a different artist. This makes each accommodation almost as unique as you are, so to speak, with an eclectic mix to choose from that ranges from unfussy to madcap, large to small. Yet attention to detail is ubiquitous throughout so, for example, rooms with lots of natural light have been provided with large windows to let it all in.

That’s just one example but there’s plenty more to choose from and part of the fun of a stay here if finding them out for yourself. Then there’s the wonderful tropical garden which is an assorted delight of palm trees and exotic flora. It almost reminded us of the Brazilian rainforest without the creepy crawlies, such is the density of yuccas, bougainvilleas and other exotic plants, thus making it just about the perfect place to enjoy a summery breakfast or meal.

Also try the Wi Zen Space, with lots of different massages and well being. Even the location is pretty cool, for it manages to be near enough to both the beach and the pedestrian zone, but far enough away from the very centre so as not to be noisy, although we should mention that on some occasions, front facing rooms may be subject to a modicum of street noise.

Surely there can’t be many more hotels of its type left: a family run accommodation (the Redolfi family has owned it since 1942) that is affordable, trendy, friendly and located right in the heart of the French Riviera to boot!
