A hotel in Aix en Provence that’s charming, a little bit different without costing the earth – is it too much to ask for? Not with the family-run Hôtel Cézanne, just off the Cours Mirabeau in the heart of beautiful Aix. Madame Spieth has done an excellent job with this historical town centre building, creating a bright, bold and happy space with deep reds and purples, a touch of the avant-garde without ever jumping overboard; baroque, chic and full of character.

For those who don’t know it, Aix is one of the more lively towns in Provence, the university and warm southern spirit giving the town an air of a mini-Paris with lots of restaurants and cafes, people relaxing and enjoying the 300 days of sunshine it is lucky enough to get.

Back in the Hôtel Cézanne, we’ll move upstairs where the 17th century doors create a slightly more classic approach – the emphasis here is lots of comfort with big beds and beautiful linen. The hotel is classified as “3 stars” but the attention to detail and general quality of the furnishings definitely aim upwards.

This is a place to come and stay, knowing that the owners have put a lot of thought not just into presentation but into the very friendly soul of the hotel. A stamped postcard lies waiting on the desk, ready to send home your impressions of Provence and Aix, free computers and free Wifi access, the minibar is complementary (though not for alcoholic drinks – for a glass of wine there’s a very nice bar downstairs with an honour system). Overall then the hotel has a very friendly and relaxed spirit; a blend of informality and style, it’s great to see a hotel run by people who really care.
