Now when you think of St Tropez, the adjectives that probably come to mind are chic, luxurious, stylish and (probably) ostentatious. Well, unlike many other hotels in the area, the Hotel Pastis is anything but pretentious, or ostentatious, but it does score heavily on the other points.

Small with only 9 rooms in all and privately run it has that relaxed feeling, a sort of laid back sophistication that can only be achieved by people of taste who know what they are doing when it comes the art of hospitality. There’s no dress code here and the idea is to make guests feel as if they are staying in a private house – albeit a rather top notch one – where the personality of the owners is etched onto the house itself, rather than following some stale corporate code.

So the Larkin’s passion of 20th century art, painting and photography is evident everywhere, be it in the well laid out reception, other public areas, or rooms, which are furnished with an assorted blend of period and 'modern classic' pieces, plus unique 'objets d'art'. The touch is light and airy and everything is at hand. From superbly sprung beds, luxury linens, spacious bathrooms to modern niceties such as flat screens tv, and DVDs.

Some rooms even have view to the beautiful private garden with its century old palm trees, heated pool bar and terrace. Yet despite, this relaxed almost Provencal country feel, we are only a 10 minute walk from the centre of St. Tropez, with its legendary glitz.
