Located within the city walls of Avignon and only a few minutes away from the Palais du Pape and the legendary “Pont d'Avignon” (yes, the one of the nursery rhyme) the Maison du Lumani serves up a different twist on the traditional Provence B&B.

We're talking avant-garde here rather than bucolic pastures and cool and minimalist are probably the operative words to describe it. The hosts, Jean (architect) and Elisabeth (artist) have highly developed artistic sensibilities and this is, of course, reflected in their home from home.

The building itself may be 19th century but the idea behind the decor is that it must look good and be useful rather than be old just for the sake of it. Yes, it does have some wood beams, stone walls and tiled floors as well as some antique decor of yesteryear but this townhouse is mixed in with modern design furnishings, sculptures and areas for contemplation, whilst Elisabeth herself scoured much of Europe for contemporary furniture. And with Elisabeth being a painter by profession colour is something that is definitely not missing at the Maison Lumani.

Despite being in the city center it is also wonderfully tranquil. If the minimalist rooms with their abstract paintings and clever lighting won't relax you with their Zen like qualities then the sound of the light splash of the fountain or the birds singing will. Plus all five bedrooms look out onto the 600 m2 garden, which is unique to Avignon, the view of which again makes you forget you're actually in town.

Maison Lumani is also within walking distance from many of the sights of Avignon. So for those of you who like to mix historic city sites with beautiful countryside and a creative welcome then Avignon, and in particular the Maison Lumani, is a great base from which to explore Provence.
