Imagine waking up in the morning, rolling over and having, just to yourself, views across the waters of the Bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius. Maison La Minervetta is a little bit exclusive, not a boutique hotel but just a very special place to stay.
Accommodation in Sorrento has never reached this level of refinement with great sofas, Indonesian beds and chaise longues spread out on the hotels deck perched above the old fishing port.
Do it small and do it very, very well could be the motto here. The 12 rooms are each decorated in the maximum of comfy but stylish fashion with huge windows allowing all of the available Mediterranean colours to come pouring in. This wonderful small hotel is a real gem with an equally interesting history. It was built in the 1950s as one of the most exclusive restaurants in the area by Don Giovanni Cacace.
Fifteen years later, however, the restaurant was rented and left the family hands. It wasn’t until 2003 that Signora Adda and her son Marco, a scenographer, and the latest generation in the Cacace family, bought the building back. Using their skills in creating dramatic scenery they put the finishing touches to the set and the curtains are now open on this spectacular and charming hotel.
La Minervetta sits not above the tourist port in Sorrento but a little further along, on top of the quieter, traditional fishing port which still remains a bit of a secret place for many of the visitors to Sorrento. The pace of things is a little calmer here, the restaurants and bars that much more authentic and these can all be reached by the hotel’s private stairway.
Despite the changes that have taken place in the area around Amalfi and Sorrento in recent years the fishermen can still be seen mending their nets in the afternoon and the local boats return at the end of the day, loaded with the freshest of produce for an excellent dinner.
Some other nice touches include a swimming pool positioned on the edge of the terrace allowing you to swim seemingly above the Mediterranean and the hotel’s kitchen which is beautifully decorated and open to guests to wander through or alternatively sit and relax.
The overall feel of La Minervetta is relaxation and a reassuringly healthy dose of calm and charm.

Things to do
The historic centre of Sorrento has plenty of shopping opportunities where, with the main streets closed to traffic, you can wander freely without the normal concern for the Ferrari driver wannabes. The more refined area of Sorrento, where the hotel is based, is all about terraces, parks and gardens on the edge of the plateau that stands above the Bay of Naples.
Whilst you may just want to spend some serious time relaxing, you should also note that the hotel has an excellent position from which to exploit the local area and its rich history. Pompeii is just 45 minutes away by car and if you don’t to drive then the local train or Circumvesuviana makes the trip in just 25 minutes, leaving from behind the main piazza and arriving just 5 minutes from the entrance to the site itself.
The same train can be used to visit Naples itself an incredibly rich city that gets a hard press from rest of Europe. Italians themselves feel a little bit jealous of Neapolitans who have some of the best cooking to be found in Italy, one of the best archeological museums in the world (the National Archeological Museum) with all of the prime pieces from Pompei and Herculaneum and even quite a few Caravaggios spread throughout a number of the churches from when the artist was encouraged to leave Rome to calm down a little.
Sorrento of course also has excellent access to the islands in the Bay of Naples, not just the ostentatious Capri but Ischia and Procida. Boats also depart regularly for Amalfi, Positano and Naples itself. Private boats can be hired by the hour and the day for those seeking a little more personalized comfort.
