Castello di Spaltenna

A truly historic Tuscany hotel, right in the heart of Chianti.

Knights in shining Armour, shields, spears, thick stonewalls and an austere beauty leave you in no doubt that the Castello di Spaltenna is a true medieval castle. Indeed, the citadel and church were first documented in 1030 and it is a place replete with history and legend. The bedrooms, for example, were originally built as monk’s cells which allude to the fact that the Castello di Spaltenna actually started off life as a monastery.

Perhaps because of this rooms are not exceedingly large, but they are very comfortable and decorated in a style in keeping with the history of the place - wrought iron beds, terracotta floors and genuine antique pieces see to that.

As for the rest of the interior, wooden ceilings and portals further embellish the place with a sense of the past. Modern comforts, however, are everywhere not least of which the indoor swimming pool or the underground bar with wine cellar.

The whole Spaltenna complex, surrounded as it is by woods and vineyards, further looks out over a peaceful valley; though it should be mentioned in some cases the view will be of Gaiole’s housing developments. Notwithstanding this, it remains, a truly historic hotel in the heart of Chianti.
