What can one say about Matera? Well, it’s a magical place and is officially recognised as such, having been awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO for its unique stone dwellings known as Sassi – houses literally carved out of rocks – and wonderfully kept town centre.

You will find the Hotel in Pietra right in the heart of Matera and true to form emanates the spirit of the town.

Conceived as a boutique hotel, it manages to be exclusive, elegant and atmospheric (goodness is it atmospheric) and historic, as it is part of a 14th century structure. All 4 rooms and 4 suites have been carved out of the natural rocky formations and blend seamlessly with all the other common areas, such as the reading room, Zen Room, cellar and large hall.

In fact, all rooms still have their primary typical characteristics as showed by details like the old stone staircase in the "suite with terrace" once used to reach the church tower and now used to reach a panoramic terrace, or the "manger" once used to store corn and feed the animals. In the "suite with tub", a small steel staircase take to an exclusive "cistern" wine cellar once used to collect rain-water.

It gives “solid as a rock” a whole new meaning.

Getting there

L'hotel in Pietra is located amongst Matera's Sassi, in the historical part of the city closed to the traffic; it is an ideal area to discover historical and fascinating alleys of Matera by foot.

Arriving by car:
A parking space for a car or bike in a garage located in Piazza Cesare Firrao is available for hotel guests (15€ per day). On demand the Luggage can be carried the 300 metres between the garage and hotel upon request (formal request of this service and indication of the approximate arrival time are required when booking).

This walk is lovely, through the central historic piazza gradually and progressively into Matera's Sassi.
