The Antico Borgo di Tabiano Castello sure goes back a long way. To the 11th century, in fact. It was actually built on the ruins of an old Roman settlement and for quite a few centuries it was military stronghold of the Pallavicino family, one of the most powerful families of the medieval era, which dominated this strategic area during the centuries of struggle between the Imperial and Vatican forces.

That’s the history bit done. The comfort bit is just as impressive. The 25 accommodations, which are made up of a mix of rooms, suites and apartments, (so you can take your pick for what’s best for you) are all divided among the old guard tower and the original main building. The Borgo di Tabiano is in fact a complex of buildings set around an ancient citadel on top of a hill, hence its military credentials as touched on above.

But we digress. The rooms may be disparate in size and purpose but all have fantastic view of the countryside and the River Po valley. Plus attention to detail and furnishings are all of the first order. The original stone walls, wood-beam ceilings and even antique bathtubs and four poster beds in some rooms (the apartments tend to be more modern) all add a regal feel to the place.

The old world atmosphere is superb and the use of the spa in a cave underneath the hotel is another experience not to be missed. The Borgo di Tabiano commands everything around it and is so peaceful and quiet that the feeling is other worldly. This is a great bonus for some, not so great for others, especially those with young kids who want a lot of action.

Also the only restaurant other then the in-house eatery is a car drive away. With this in mind it retains its very special character and atmosphere that lovers of solitude, history and beauty will find really hard to beat.
