Genius Loci Country Inn
Hotel Type: Hotel
Environment: Countryside
Number of Rooms: 8

Frances Mayes once said “I can think of no greater pleasure than to get lost on some country road in Umbria." We know exactly what she means, for even a simple journey through the bucolic countryside here is an experience in itself. This is a magical land of poets, artists, unrivalled beauty and charm, and right in the heart of Umbria we find the Genius Loci. Sitting proudly atop a sprawling vineyard, it manages to capture the very essence of the region, purveying, as it does, a timeless landscape of breathtaking views.
Add to the mix a century’s old architecture, panoramic pool, wonderful hospitality - Mary and Maurizio are simply delightful hosts - and you have the ingredients for that perfect Italian stay. The Genius Loci, itself is the gratifying result of a detailed restoration of an 1880’s farmhouse, complete with antique stones and bricks, hand-hewn oak beams and terracotta floors all of which, thankfully, have been brought back to their original splendour.
Even so, we just can’t get enough of those views, and neither could the builders of the Genius Loci, it seems, for all eight accommodations, also offer sweeping panoramas of the lush vineyards, olive groves and sunflower fields. There’s nowhere here where you won’t get a view, which in itself is almost enough to make you forget all else that the place offers here, such as the European King Size beds, fully tiled bathrooms with fine Italian marble vanities and, importantly, a seamless integration of warm rustic elegance and modern amenities (WIFI, LCD TVs, etc).
Whatever you wish to do, whether it is sipping a cappuccino in the inviting bar built around a 1450’s grape press or simply basking in the sun by the panoramic pool, the setting is just perfect for breathing in the real Umbria. In Roman mythology a Genius Loci was the guardian spirit of a place.
Today, the term is most often applied to a very special rural and pure landscape and that just about sums up the Genius Loci. Please Note: Genius Loci is a non smoking inn.

An Ancient Land
Umbria is an ancient land of saints, poets and artists, centuries-old traditions, world famous handcrafts (ie. hand-loomed fabrics and ceramics) renown wines, acclaimed food and unrivaled beauty and charm. Every town or hamlet abounds in artistic treasures and kindles a sense of discovery. Umbria is home to some of the finest works of Cimabue, Giotto and Benozzo Gozzoli, as well as to several of the most outstanding examples of medieval architecture in central Italy.
Some of the most famous works in the history of art are only minutes away at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia and at the Basilica di San Francesco di Assisi.
Umbria hosts many outstanding international manifestations, such as Eurochocolate, Umbria Jazz, Festival dei Due Mondi and Il Mercato delle Gaite to mention just a few. All are less than 40 minutes away from Genius Loci.
The proximity to all the major points of interest makes it possible to take in the sights and to enjoy time at the inn itself. Genius Loci is ideal for longer stays which allow you to explore, experience, relate to and immerse yourself in the spirit of place, in the true essence of Umbria, in the unique and magical atmosphere of Genius Loci.
