Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.
A number of friends, perchance international class rowers, as in the case of Luis Ahrens Teixeira, regularly used the Maranhão Lake, deep in the heart of the Alentejo, for rowing and training purposes.
The place instantly captured their imagination and these friends came to the quick and easy conclusion this was the perfect spot for a country hotel. It had everything: natural beauty, peace, lake, cork trees, bright skies, the works, and so they went out to create their own version of Paradise.
Thus was born a labour of love where the number one architectural priority was not only to integrate the singular Alentejo landscape with the modern, comfortable and outward facing design of the hotel, but also to keep an environmentally sustainable energy policy throughout the place. It didn't matter these friends had no previous experience of the hotel business, they had passion and a clear vision of what they wanted.
And here's the spectacular result, a symbiotic relation between ultra modern and bucolic, interior and exterior, where the outside spaces blend seamless with the comfortable interiors.
Such a place really is unusual and a breadth of fresh air in the Alentejo region, an area better know for its simple rural dwellings. Here, though pastoral beauty goes hand in hand with forward thinking uber design and style, where everything has been thought out for a reason.
Even the roof terraces of the bedrooms double up as lounging areas. Other interesting details? There are many such as the unobstructed 180 degree views from the restaurant area and the infinity swimming pool.
Whilst outdoor and waterborne activities are the order of the day, the sightseeing options are also highly recommended, such as the world famous Alter breeding stables, the historical town of Avis or the fascinating fresh water aquarium and museum of Mora.
