A combination of the traditional and contemporary

Located in a pretty valley this 19th Portuguese country farmhouse is surrounded by imposing cork trees and the typically rural Alentejo landscape.

It is also nearby to the magnificent protected Vincentine coast and the towns of Cercal and Vila Nova de Mil Fontes. Herdade da Matinha boasts four separate rooms, all of which are ample, slate floored and functionally decorated; they include, for example, some the owner's (Alfredo) paintings.

Indeed, Alfredo is both a painter - his pictures adorn other areas of the house - as well as an excellent cook. It is no surprise, therefore, that one of the highlights of a stay here is enjoying breakfast by the kitchen over a large table or a gourmet dinner, where home grown vegetables, farm house breads and cheeses (not forgetting the local wines) are used to excellent effect (Please note, that dinner is obligatory for Saturday nights).

Herdade de Matinha has no television but there is a full Internet and e-mail facility upon request. A place that is certainly worth getting to know for its tranquillity and interesting blend of the traditional with the contemporary.
