Monte de Santa Catarina

Did you know the area of Monsaraz has the darkest night sky in Europe? By the same token it means the stars here seem brighter than anywhere else and it makes for quite a show.

To make the most of this spectacle the area has an increasing array of “dark sky watching” activities and the Monte Santa Catarina is one such place where you can participate.

It makes sense actually, for the Monte Santa Catarina is a place that shines bright, looking out as it does to the dreamy castle of Monsaraz and the wonderful view it affords of this medieval, well kept town.

That’s one side. The other takes in vistas of Alqueva, the largest artificial lake in the whole of Europe. So history and architecture on the left, leisure and water activities on the right.

What do you get in the middle? A lovely little rustic getaway with five well furnished suites where guests can breath in the magical ambience of the Alentejo, surely the most unique region in Portugal.

There are plenty of attractions at the Monte Santa Catarina, including great regional cuisine and wines to enjoy and what this accommodation likes to call an "active rest".

By this we mean a stay at the Santa Catarina can involve simply lounging around just as much as going for a trek, boating, bird watching or visiting the “eagle’s nest” the euphemism for Monsaraz, as from above that is exactly what it looks like: And of course Dark Sky watching.
