Monte Saraz
Hotel Type: Manor House
Environment: Countryside
Number of Rooms: 9
Style: Rustic
Monte Saraz is a cluster of farmhouses set below the attractive medieval town of Monsaraz, amidst the olive trees and goatherds of the upper Alentejo plains.
It includes the Casa de Lagar (the main building) where breakfast is served, containing the two suites, and four small separate farmhouses, furnished and decorated in a rustic Minimalist style, with the occasional example of ethnic art collected by the proprietor, Marc Lammerink, during his numerous journeys.
The arches of an old olive oil press encompass the alluring swimming pool, which together with the abundant gardens provide pleasant relief from the ever-present sun. The surrounding area, full of prehistoric and archaeological sites, offers easy access to the nearby whitewashed villages and historical towns. In short, one of the most attractive hotels offering the best in traditional Alentejan rural hospitality.
The basic version of the farmhouses come with a double bedroom, large living room with fireplace, bathroom and kitchen and have access to a small private garden. A sofa bed provides sleeping accommodation for one additional person or two children (extra charge). Casa da Horta and Casa da Nora also provide the possibility of renting a further double room with bathroom (extra charge).
Marc, is only too willing to help on things to do and see. And there are many! Monte Saraz is located near to Monsaraz and the pretty towns of Evora, Villa Vicosa and Borba, whilst the surrounding area is excellent for wine tasting, horseback riding, boating, trekking, dark sky and bird watching. Furthermore, it has excellent local restaurants.
Monte Saraz Reviews
Really enjoyed our stay
We enjoyed our stay very much and ended up staying an extra night. Very reasonable price, especially when compared to some other places we stayed in. Beautiful surroundings and owners/staff obviously take pride in buildings and service.
Breakfast was relaxed and the perfect way of starting the day. Peaceful water features and views. We stayed in one of the double room suites which was spacious, clean and comfortable. The only suggestion would be for the double rooms to have a mini fridge to keep cold drinks as it was very hot when we stayed (this could be tucked away in wardrobe so not to spoil the room's style).
Very handy information pack suggesting places of interest and local amenities.
We would recommend it and would stay again if back in the area.

Restaurants
Traditional Alentejo cooking contains unique flavours and aromas, to be savoured and lingered over. It is based on pork or lamb, as well as game such as boar, hare and partridge.
Bread, olive oil and aromatic herbs are essential ingredients which give body and flavour to soups, “migas” (paste made from bread, wrapped and cooked in the fat of various fried pork meats), bread stews and “açordas” (a regional soup made with large bits of locally produced bread floating in a broth scented by wild herbs such as coriander or pennyroyal crushed with garlic and dotted with sprays of the finest olive oil), while eggs, sweet pumpkin, almonds or walnuts are the sole allies of traditional convent sweets.
