Montes do Telheiro

The six cottages that make up the wonderful Montes do Telheiro started off life as workers houses where “telhas” (or tiles) were made, hence the name Telheiro.

Though these are no longer produced, what remains is a beautifully restored estate providing comfort with a typical Alentejo style and respect for nature. Hats off to Clara for taking over this abandoned group of buildings and refurbishing them to their original picturesque design.

The setting is idyllic as the houses are located in the middle of typical Alentejo countryside, with its rolling plains and cork trees to be seen for miles on end. The great beaches of the protected Alentejo coast are also relatively nearby (some 20km of pleasant, isolated country lanes to get there).

Clara herself has personally taken care of the decoration for each cottage, and being an interior decorator by profession has had the keen eye to tastefully combine the traditional rustic elements such as the old Portuguese faience and motifs with modern comforts and furnishings. Each house, for example, is equipped with all the appliances and furniture necessary to provide for a relaxing stay.

Activities include biking, horse riding, trekking and soon will include a hunting reserve. Perhaps you will just want to enjoy the privileged location and relax.

One of our favourite Secretplaces in the region and an ideal one for the traveller looking for total isolation and Alentejo tradition within a natural setting.
