Rustic, sophisticated and bewitching

The charming owners of Casa da Terena chose the village of Terena after eleven years scouring southern Europe for their dream location. It was worth the wait, for perched atop a castled hill between Monsaraz, Estremoz and Elvas, this secret corner of the Alentejo will linger in the memory with its honeyed light and olive studded hills. Built as the Bishop’s manor in the 1750’s, Casa de Terena fronts a cobbled street and 15th century Misericordia chapel, next to a 13th century castle.

The 6 en suite bedrooms, all come with stunning views - either over the Alentejo plains and lake or the cobbled streets, chapel and castle. The "sala" - with its vaulted ceiling - centres around the monumental fireplace and takes in decor with a fascinating mix of colour and objects from Mozambique to Macao, Zanzibar to Venezuela, not to mention 2000 year-old marble slabs - ‘borrowed’ from a nearby Roman temple site when the house was built 250 years ago!

This is also an excellent place for slow food devotees. Organic produce from the immediate surroundings result in some exquisite culinary creations. Buffet breakfasts are served with freshly squeezed organic juices, home-baked breads and pastries as well each morning’s pão Alentejano from the village baker. Cheeses, jams and honey are all traditionally made by local artisans, whom guests are more than welcome to visit.

If ever there was a combination of rustic and sophisticated, then the Casa da Terena is it.
