There are not many places like the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park left. Nature is still the master and many of the plants and animals based here, have long disappeared elsewhere. So its not surprising that Henrique Balsemão, despite being very well travelled, chose this area as his physical and spiritual home.

The sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean are truly beautiful and some of the best coastline and beaches in Portugal are easily reached.

Within this scenario can be found the Monte Velho, a simple, bright and comfortable lodging that fits in comfortably within the environment that encompasses it. The warm colours and feel to the place (ochre, blue and violet to mention a few) are augmented by a series of modern paintings throughout.

The yellow room where breakfast is taken, for example, holds a picture of a shoal of fish that actually seem to come and go to and from the canvas – a nice, humorous touch.

Warm sunny days or balmy nights can be spent on the hammock by the front porch reading a book or just contemplating the Alentejo countryside and taking in its inimitable fragrance.

The hotel also organises donkey rides, bike and boat trips and even offers surf lessons.

Perfect place to relax

Monte Velho is just the perfect place to relax. Only a 5-10 minute drive away from a beautiful beach, and only 30 minutes away from several Portuguese cities and sights, this place manages to offer everything without the stress and hectic of your normal work life.

I'd recommend this place to anyone.

Aljezur
The small town of Aljezur is divided in two distinct halves: to the west of the river is the old quarter, Moorish in origin and straggling along the side of a hill below the scant ruins of a tenth-century castle, whilst across the river to the east the area is more modern.

Odeceixe
Hunched on a hill and cramped by the river, Odeceixe is the last village before the vast plains of the Alentejo start appearing.

Also don't forget to visit Carrapateira, Bordeira and Amado Beaches. Fantastic for surfers
