Quinta do Caracol
Hotel Type: Apartment
Environment: Village
Number of Rooms: 8
Style: Traditional
Quinta do Caracol is a rather charming, 17th century house encompassed within a typically pretty Portuguese garden (palm trees, round swimming pool that started off life as a water tank, bird house, cobbled patio etc). It was restored some 20 years ago and as visitors stayed here increased demand fed by word of mouth led to the transformation of the old agricultural houses into lodgings.
The owner, João Viegas, has effortlessly managed to achieve this without losing any homogeneity or sense of style. Decoration inside is simple and uncluttered, yet shows a fine attention to detail, such as the painted ribbon over the double bedroom. The apartments are also separated from each other either by patios, flowered terraces or stairs thus imparting a secluded feel.
A further advantage of Quinta do Caracol is that it is located close to the centre of Tavira - itself one of the most attractive and unspoilt towns in the Algarve (Thankfully the wilder excesses of uncontrolled construction have not reached here). It is also only 3 km from the sea.
