If you have read any of our other reviews of charming Algarve accomodations, you'll probably realise that Tavira is one of the region's favourite towns. Sleepy, and almost timeless, it is one of the Algarve's last bastions of authenticity by the sea. We love it.
Some of our favourite places to stay are found in Tavira as well, and Tavira House is the new stuner in our selection. Built some 160 years ago to a wealthy Portuguese military family, it has now been beautifully restored into a luxury town house hotel.
And there's the Tavira House's unique selling point right there: it is the only small intimate and luxurious bed & breakfast townhouse to be found right in the centre of town.
The renovation, which took quite a few years to conclude, takes in traditional southern architecture with a hint of Moorish and fuses this with a contemporary interior design.
The end result is a 9 bedroom house that also takes in aa ballroom lounge, dining room, residents bar, plunge pool and roof garden, all this underpinned by a sophisticated and chic design.
So, what's your poison? Relax for a long weekend break, play golf in one of the many stunning courses nearby, wind down by the beach which is easy to get to? Then if you want any of this with a touch of class in Tavira, the Tavira House is an ideal option.
Accommodation:
The Tavira House provides 9 bedrooms varying in size and style and each has been inspired by one of the local flowers seen growing wild in the hills above the town. All rooms offer double beds and the following as standard: wardrobes, dressing tables, irons, hairdryers, sound systems for MP3 players and en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers. The Fuscia room (Double) is the only one to have a bath. Many rooms can be converted into family rooms with the addition of a cot or a single bed.

Explore Tavira
Tavira is one of the most attractive towns in the Algarve and has often been called the Venice of the Algarve. During the occupation of the Algarve by the Moors it was considered of great importance due to its fishing industry. Dom Paio Peres Correia took it from the Moors in anger in 1242 after seven of his principal Knights were killed during a period of truce. In the 17th Century the port was of considerable importance, shipping produce such as salt, dried fish and wine. Like most of the Algarve its buildings were all virtually destroyed by the earthquake of 1755.
The town has since been rebuilt with many fine 18th Century buildings along with its 37 churches. A Roman bridge links the two parts of the town across the River Gilão. The church of Santa Maria do Castelo is built on the site of a Moorish Mosque and in it are the tombs of Dom Paio Peres Correia and his seven Knights. Its original economic reliance on the fishing industry has now changed with the altered migration patterns of the tuna fish and tourism is now increasingly important. The population is in the region of 20,000 inhabitants and the surrounding area is still very rural and undeveloped. This is now slowly changing due to the demands of the tourist industry and opening of golf courses in the vicinity.
Tavira is one of the gems of the Algarve – a very peaceful, relaxed town that has retained it’s original charm and truly Portuguese flavour. Ideally placed for golf, horse riding, exploring the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve and finding the ‘Secret Waterfall’ you’ll be spoilt for choice on your visit!
