The Azores archipelago have long been considered to be some of the most beautiful islands in the world, a true paradise for nature lovers with a vast volcanic coastline and the most stunning lakes.

The island of São Miguel (the Green Island) is particularly beautiful nature wise and added to this bucolic paradise you will now find the island’s first proper design accommodation – the Furnas Lake Villas - 10 post modern rectangular constructed villas made of local cedar wood built on stilts over a man made pond, or some may say moat. All surrounded by a vast array of flora and vegetation.

The whole place was designed by the owners architect brother who transformed it from an old working granary back in 2004 and the result is stunning. It really stands out with its minimalist high tech modern design, that would not look out of place in a modern city, yet the harmony with the beautiful surrounding nature is just perfect, so kudos to the architect for getting this balance of modernity and nature just right.

Inside, a modern bright decoration continues in the same vein. Neutral colours and large windows to let as much light and nature in. You are also only a few hundred metres away from the Furnas, a small village, where you can get someone to cook the local delicacy – Cozido das Furnas. A large pan full of meat and vegetable is lowered into a hole dug in the ground and left to boil for a few hours. The natural hot springs below the surface act an oven and the result is a delicious stew. This comes pretty handy as the Furnas Lake Villas are self catering.

You can make the most of many activities, of course, but if its nature and relaxation you want, touched with a hint of modern sophistication and design, then you‘ve come to the right place.
