The Prince of Liechtenstein upon his visit to Bussaco once said, “In Europe, there’s nothing like it. Visiting the forest of Bussaco I felt transported to the marvellous and ancient woods of the east”.
His words still have a ring of truth to this day, and the Bussaco hotel, built in 1906 by the Portuguese Monarchy, is surely one of the most beautiful in Europe. The building itself is a Manueline-Gothic masterpiece of Portuguese architecture and stands on a par with many of the country’s great buildings.
Some of the most representative Portuguese furniture and paintings have been used liberally throughout making the hotel just as much a work of art inside as outside, though with many of the Portuguese furnishings being heavy by nature this does give the hotel inside a rather imposing feel.
Being surrounded by the magnificent national forest of Bussaco (composed of rare trees and exotic plants of exquisite beauty many of which were brought back to Bussaco at the time of early Portuguese colonial explorations), provides that extra touch.
The Bussaco also houses one of the country’s finest restaurants that also boasts a truly superb wine list. A meal in the palatial dining room is thus sure to be a memorable occasion and highly recommended. All these plus points make it one of the best known hotels in Portugal and it has become a tourist magnet in its own right.
