Casa da Levada
Hotel Type: Manor House
Environment: Village
Number of Rooms: 5
Style: Traditional
The Casa da Levada brochure talks of paradise in the mountains and a stay in this old mansion (or shall one say, mini castle) certainly feels like it.
Located on the Aboboreira Mountain in a very picturesque hamlet, the surrounding vistas are simply superb. Streets run along the century old tracks of the oxcarts between large hard boulders and curious water mills.
In fact, the name 'Levada' comes from the granite watercourse used to transport water to the cornfields and mills. The ancient espigueiros (or corn-cribs) where the corn dries in the sun further add to the enchantment of the scenery. Casa da Levada takes in five bedrooms, the third of which is located in the 16th century tower with its own private bathroom, just outside the landing, the fifth is called the"Cow's Room" as it used to be a cow shed. The concern in keeping as much of the original materials as possible throughout, such as the traditional locks and system for closing and opening the heavy doors is evident, helping to keep the authentic feel of the house.
The more active of you can stock up on the generous breakfast and climb the 900m high mountain, admire the awesome views it affords and breathe in the fresh mountain air A final word, the owners are incredibly hospitable and do everything to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

Places to visit
The nearest place you can visit is Amarante, a town with history and birth place of so many writers and artists. Don’t miss the Amadeo Souza Cardoso Museum, the São Gonçalo Church and numerous other monuments.
But if you prefer, you can simply walk along the riverside and sit in one of the many “esplanadas” and enjoy time pass by.
The Douro River is also not far away and a tour or visit to one of the port wine farms is always a great experience.
You can also drive up the Marão hills and visit the famous Mateus Palace.
