Quinta do Abôl de Baixo

The Quinta de Abôl de Baixo is located in a 35 hectare estate complete with vineyards, orchards and gardens at the point where the Douro and Tamega rivers meet.

It’s origin is lost in the mist of time but earliest records go back to the 15th century and King Philip the 1st apparently had a part in its construction. A pretty regal beginning.

In effect, a stay here is a journey back into the middle ages, the small group of houses nestled on a verdant hillside still retain their old granite walls, black slabs and liberal use of old wood. Except that it also underwent a major refurbishment in 2006, which thankfully respected the original lines.

So what you get in the 21st century are a total of nine bedrooms – three of which are part of individual houses – that are comfortable and well furnished. Some even have their own whirlpool bathrooms. The main public area is the main house, which is a great place to socialise with the kind hosts or other guests. There’s a nice chess set in there by the way.

This area is also Portugal’s wine region par excellence and, produces the famed "Vinho Verde" that foreign travellers usually take a liking to. If you do eat or drink too much than spa and wellness treatments are available less than a kilometre away in Entre-os-Rios (literally Between the Rivers). Penafiel, a small town that is presumed to be the second oldest in Portugal is also nearby.

Indeed, this area is ancient and known for its archaeological treasures. Finds dating back to the Ancient Rome are particularly abundant.
