One cannot but fail to be impressed by the sight of the 18th century twin towered edifice and its granite freestone as it comes stunningly into view.

This is a magnificent manor house in all respects - beautiful Portuguese architecture, private chapel, vast 30 hectare farming estate producing port as well as excellent red and white table wines, surrounding landscapes of utter beauty as the Douro river meanders towards the sea and employees (the actual owners live in Lisbon) who truly care for the house and region.

They imbue the house with simple regional tastes, such as the laces on the sofas on top of the typical Portuguese decoration and their welcoming nature adds to the palpable sense of peace and tranquillity. Activities here include wine tasting (a visit to the cellars is highly recommended), bike riding and a number water activities in the nearby Douro River.

The Casa das Torres de Oliviera also boasts an excellent swimming pool with excellent views of the countryside. Dinner can only be served in advance but there are many fine restaurants nearby.

Indeed, the house is close by to three of the region's most charming towns - Lamego, Vila Real and Amarante. Well worth a visit.
