The BBC gave the countryside hotel Casa de Casal de Loivos the accolade of having one of the 6 best views in the world.

This praise is merited for the panorama over the Douro valley from the hilltop where the house stands is simply stunning and all rooms open out to the terrace to take full advantage of it. So impressive is the sight that it is almost easy to forget that the house itself is a beautiful historic place in its own right, full of family heirlooms such as the intriguing vitrines showcasing the owners great great grandmother's clothes, or that guests will be spoiled to the full by the extremely courteous and professional staff. Built in the 17th century it has been in the hands of Manuel Pimentel's family since 1733.

Having suffered many years of decay and neglect he set about restoring it in 1991 with much energy. Changes include turning the stables and cellars into the sitting room and five elegant bedrooms, all of which enjoy those glorious views.

There is also an adjoining honeymoon suite, which affords greater privacy. Despite the many attractive features of the house, what will stick in the mind will always be those views.
