So much of Madeira remains unspoilt and waiting to be discovered.
The south west coast of the island is a case in point. It may take a while getting there from the urban area of Funchal on the newly extended “Via Rapida”, and we can think of no better place to enjoy it then the Summerplace Guesthouse, a smart boutique style guesthouse that ticks all the right boxes in terms of elegance, beautiful location and friendly atmosphere. Barry and Johannes are the incredibly hospitable owners of this 5 bedroom bed & breakfast and if anything defines their way of doing things then it’s the personal touch. Basically you are treated as a good friend and socializing is an important part of the atmosphere here.
But the place itself is also beautifully decorated. Each one of the five bedrooms has been individually furnished by mixing antiques with modern fabrics and décor which helps combine the contemporary with the old. Diversity is one of the operative words to describe furnishings. Pieces have been sourced from what looks like all over the world – a testament to Barry and Johannes’s many travels around Africa, Asia and Europe. The rooms are tastefully decorated with thoughtful attention to amenities.
Lovers of nature will also think they’ve died and gone to heaven. The pretty garden and tranquil pool area offer a sense of peace. The “Levada” walks (irrigation channels built over the centuries to transport water across the island) are very near by as are custom made trails for trekking and biking. The scenic beauty and panorama of the Lombada dos Cedros valley is yet another reason to enjoy the Summerplace Guesthouse. Are there any downsides to the Summerplace? Well, the place is not suitable for kids, so children under 16 are not allowed, which makes it a no no for families, unless you book all the rooms. Being a very sociable place, it may not also be ideal if you want to just left to your own devices all the time. On the other hand it is a home from home and you are treated as part of the family. Finally, whilst there is an in-house restaurant that serves excellent breakfasts and also offers intimate candle-lit dinners every alternate evening (and a great option too), it does not serve lunch.
But we think this is a small price to pay for staying in such a lovely guesthouse.
