Guest House Douro
Hotel Type: Bed & Breakfast
Environment: City
Number of Rooms: 5
Style: Contemporary
The Guest House Douro has a special claim to fame (actually, more than one - see interesting facts in the hotel board).
It is the first and, as yet, only guest house located on Porto's World Heritage waterfront by the Douro River (the Ribeira).
To many, this captivating quarter is what Porto is all about. Old world and crumbling perhaps, but incredibly picturesque and atmospheric.
And here at the Guest House Douro, you have a ring side seat, as all rooms provide views of either the Port Wine lodges and famous bridge or Fonte Taurina Street, one of the oldest streets in Porto, the first references to which date back to 1196.
Basically, much of what Porto has to offer, though not all of course, is but just a step away. Night time too, as the promenade lights up is also a special occasion. Obviously, to be part of this august environment means that the Guest House Douro is itself a pretty old place.
We're talking centuries here. But a thoroughly refurbished interior has added quality and modern comforts. Its eight rooms are all, independently furnished, spotlessly clean and though on the small side, decoration is beautiful. Large windows help take in the atmosphere of this fascinating area outside.
A final word about the owners. Carmen and João, go beyond the call of duty. They have a passion for what they do and that will become immediately apparent to anyone. Their infectious welcome helps make a stay here an experience.
Rooms: The Guest House Douro may be old world in terms of age but the interior is full on modern and comfortable. All eight accommodations have their own unique decoration (no two are alike) but the icing on the cake is the exceptional warmth of Carmen and João, who are obviously in love not only with their guesthouse but also the city of Porto itself.
Please note: The Guest House Douro is a non smoking accommodation and closes at 1 O'Clock.

An interesting fact
The Guest House Douro may be the only luxury bed and breakfast in the Ribeira area of Porto and classified as a National Monument but it has other claims to fame.
For example, the creator of one of Portugal's national dishes was born and lived here. José Luis Gomes de Sa, created the "bacalhau à Gomes de Sá," a cod dish that is widely eaten throughout Portugal, during the time he used the Guest House Douro (prior to becoming the beautiful bed & breakfast it is now, of course) as a store and ware house.
Don't forget: the Guest House Douro enjoys direct and spectacular views a over the river Douro, the Dom Luis I bridge and numerous wine cellars of Porto, or the picturesque street Source Taurine, one of the oldest streets of Porto, references to it go back to 1296.
Things to do
When staying at the Guest House Douro, you are only steps away from an abundance of attractions and historical monuments, boat tours, funicular, and so much more!
Relax and let the Douro River offer its unique and serene light by languishing on the river terraces along the promenade.
