Escondrijo
Hotel Type: Bed & Breakfast
Environment: Village
Number of Rooms: 2
Style: Stylish
Cool, hip and an utterly delightful Vejer accommodation.
The movement in Spain towards the boutique hotel concept - accommodations with a cool vibe, informal atmosphere and no little amount of chic – continues to grow apace and the Escondrijo, located in the old quarters of Vejer de la Frontera, is a perfect, and delightful, example of this new wave.
Constructed from the 18th century ruins of Vera Cruz Chapel it has been transformed by Nigel and Tenette with 21st century sensibilities in mind and a philosophy where quality obviously takes precedence over quantity.
There are only four rooms, but what rooms they are arranged around the traditional open patio, they are decorated with the lightest of touches and are without doubt a testimony to cool and hip design. Two of the rooms also have their own private terrace with panoramas that seem to go on for ever. Candles on the stairs, loungers on the roof terrace, scatter cushions in the chill-out room, bold colours on the walls, further add to an impressive atmosphere, where nothing seems out of place or overdone.
Then of course, there’s the town atmosphere in Vejer, itself one of the most beautiful white towns of the region and a real must to see. Beautiful countryside and beaches (ten minutes away) surrounding Vejer more than mitigate the fact that the Escondrijo does not have a pool.
Not to be missed.
