Now, anyone who’s ever been there will know that Santiago de Compostela is a tremendous town. Historic, beautiful and endowed with some of the finest architecture in the whole of Spain – just witness the cathedral and the old town.
It would be great to stay in a place here that is at least an equal to the town in terms of beauty and charm, so may we present the Hotel Altair. In our opinion, this accommodation (along with the sister hotel Costa Vella, also in our selection), is one of the most special places to stay in Santiago.
Centrally located in the old part of town, yet away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it is a place made to unwind, and manages to combine a certain simplicity and history with wonderfully friendly staff (acting beyond the call of duty is how some guests have described actions).
The building may be historic, but the inside has been done up to a treat so that a freshness pervades the whole place. Obvious thought has gone into the details, from the lighting and furniture to the way all 11 rooms are equipped. And don’t forget to try the intimate and informal bar – just great for a winding down drink.
Breakfast is also a high point here. Three type of home made jam, great coffee or tea, tarts and several spreads, should set you in good stead to enjoy the sights of one of Spain’s loveliest cities.
