A small but perfectly formed and excellently located Santiago hotel.
Think of Santiago de Compostela and probably the cathedral and the Santiago way come to mind, but where to stay if you are looking for a well located, comfortable and charming hotel in this world heritage city. Here’s our suggestion – the Costa Vella.
This super little hotel lies on the Porta de la Peña Street, one of the seven gates that lead into the old quarters of the city. Most most of the major monuments are within walking distance from here, including the city’s ex-libris, the Cathedral of St James, so the location is second to none. The hotel itself, which is classified as a historic and artistic complex, does the local area justice, with the major renovation work carried out in 1999 having been sympathetically undertaken, without altering the traditional glass fronted architecture, whilst adding to the comfort and enjoyment guests will palpably feel here.
So what are the other plus points, though rooms are on the small size, they are perfectly formed with a combination of classical and modern decor that takes advantage of the Costa Vella’s attributes. Floor to wall windows, for example, make the garden view that much more impressive. In short, everything is in the right place and nothing out of order.
Then there’s the beautiful garden which looks out onto the city walls and falls within the shadow of the convent. It really is the perfect place to enjoy a summer breakfast consisting of Galician delicacies such as honeyed cheese, almond cakes and homemade bread.
