Son Foguero is one of our favourite places to stay in Mallorca, Son Foguero is one of the originals. Long before Mallorca became synonymous with the “holiday in the sun” concept, this Finca was already providing discerning travellers with its classy style of getting away from it all breaks.

Built in the rustic Mallorca style, the Son Foguero in fact goes back over three centuries and being located on top of a small hill is the master of all it surveys. It is heavenly peace on earth. As the owner, Maria Antonia, herself states “The silence is absolute, broken only by the sound of birds and the whisper of the breeze, as they wander through the garden perfumed with orange and jasmine, admiring the sculptures.” Now “sculptures” is also one of the operative words as in addition to being totally peaceful this is also a very sophisticated place indeed.

Modern art by the renowned artist Pere Alemany goes hand in hand with antique furnishings whilst the five extremely large and luminous suites have been designed by Maria Antonia herself (an interior designer by profession) who knew exactly what she was doing in how to provide sophistication, comfort and style. The taste buds are also very well catered for at the Son Foguero.

Breakfast is delicious – take your pick from numerous home grown fruits, jams, breads and cheeses and dinner (on request) is always fresh, cooked in the local style using local ingredients, many of them the finca’s own produce - including wine.

Again, we paraphrase the owner’s very words - an ideal refuge for lovers of peace, nature and art. It is for these reasons, amongst others, that we felt this to be a very special place indeed.

Somewhere in this middle distance, where the parched landscape resembles Tuscany not Spain, with rolling golden fields and Cypress trees, I found one of my favourite hotel bedrooms of all time.

Son Fogueró is not everyone's cup of tea - it is eccentric, slightly Bohemian and bursting with character. Owned by a delightful pink-haired Majorcan actress and her husband who is one of Spain's leading modern artists, this rambling finca has just five bedrooms, a treasure-filled salon for breakfast, and a garden dotted with weird and wonderful sculptures.

Dinner is by prior arrangement only, but nearby Sineu, which holds the island's most traditional weekly market, has plenty of restaurants. The strength of this hotel is not its service, or star ratings; what it offers is pure undiluted tranquillity - not something for which Majorca is known but which, when you venture off the beaten track, is amazingly easy to find.
