Nothing quite like it! Unashamedly over the top and lots of fun, the 3.14 hotel in Cannes is a shocking and vibrant palace of fun. Everything about it is playful, loud and very, very bright. From the pool and Jacuzzi on the roof to enormous parrot cage behind reception, the five floor levels themed on the different continents, staff dressed the part, adult section to the sensually-themed boutique on “Level Earth” this hotel will not be everyone’s cup of tea but for lovers of big, bold design who appreciate style blended with irony, it could just be one of the most unique hotels you’ve ever stayed in.

The key feature of Cannes is La Croisette – the beautiful seafront boulevard which attracts the beautiful people. Happily the 3.14 Hotel is just 50 yards away, with its own private beach (there is an extra charge for access) providing one of the more stylish retreats in Cannes.

How then did this all come about? Well if one of your parents was a long-haul airline pilot you’d have ample chance to travel the world from a fairly young age, right? And that’s exactly what Karine Ellena-Partouche did, absorbing and taking on these subtle influences of culture and style when she was a little girl. Now grown up she founded the 90-room 4 star hotel we see now. Tons of imagination, the Hotel 3.14 is a playground for the mind; a stimulating fantasy world. As they say about themselves,

“Whether you are from here or there, it doesn’t matter…. here you are elsewhere….”

Exactly! You won’t find anything quite like the 3.14, it is an Aladdin’s cave of possibilities. But are there any downsides? Some of the rooms are on the smaller side and you really need to enjoy design and frivolous colours/textures and playful touches all round. The internet tends to be expensive but let’s not forget, this is Cannes!

Our favourite bits were the roof-top pool and Jacuzzi (cool water in the summer makes for a stunningly refreshing dip) all using an artificial lunar effect to give the impression you’re floating in a natural rock pool. Very odd but very exciting. There is also a hammam and massage cabin on the roof so if hunting autographs isn’t really your cup of tea then just come up here and get far, far away from it all.

ll Activities
Days in Cannes seem to orientate themselves around the beach/pool, massage, lunch, siesta, shopping/reading/swimming, aperativo and a wonderful dinner. In short, nothing that involves too much hard work; it is a self-indulgent kind of town and sometimes a little bit of self-indulgence goes down fairly well.

Just 200 metres from the 3.14 Hôtel is the Rue d'Antibes, the main shopping street of Cannes and one of the most elegant stretches of European couture. Many of the streets are car-free allowing to stop, shop and have a coffee in peace. For less glamour and more affordable prices, head up towards the Rue Meynadier; a slightly more “lived in” feel with plenty of lively cafés and restaurants, this street joins the city centre with the old quarter. Also worth a look is the market, le marché Forville for a bit of inspiration before dinner – all of those Provençal colours, fruit, vegetables and fish.

Of course the beach is right there, just 100 metres from the hotel so if you can’t be lured by the pool, spend some time on the golden sands and wait around till apéritif-time.

ll Tips & Getting There
Nice and handy this: Nice Côte d’Azur airport is a 30 minute taxi ride away, (expect to pay approx 80 Euros) or alternatively just 6 minutes in one of the many helicopter transfers.

If you are driving from the direction of Nice Côte d’Azur airport, follow the A8 autoroute in the direction of Aix-en-Provence and take exit 42, Cannes. Follow signs for "Centre Croisette". The hotel 3.14 is located is Rue François Einesy, the first road after (to the west) of the Hotel Carlton.
