Albergo Villa Marta
San Lorenzo a Vaccoli - Lucca - Lucca - Tuscany
Countryside
Number of rooms: 15

The Tuscany villa is a dream for many and what is found here, just three miles outside of the beautiful town of Lucca, may well fulfill that. A large walled garden with magnolia, pine and cherry trees and of course olives and cypresses creates a wonderful space to relax whilst the Martinelli family and staff are on hand to tempt you with excellent food in the ambience of a Tuscan villa from the 1800s.

The four star Villa Marta hotel opened in 2005 and has already found a dedicated but discrete fan base. The beauty of staying at a hotel like this is the dedication and genuine hospitality that you can find there. Fifteen well-appointed rooms allows for an elegant and personalised atmosphere and the Martinellis prefer to insist on the best of traditionally cooked Tuscan ingredients and individually furnished rooms rather than compromise quality.

Everything is done in such a way that you can slow down and really absorb the beauty of this stunning part of Italy. Top marks go to the garden and the villa’s public areas which are light years away from anything you would normally associate with a hotel. In fact, during the summer, the garden becomes the real living room with a terrace and pergola and wicker furniture in which to read or sample one of the local wines. Jasmine grows over the walls that run round the garden where their scent mixes with the pine. For those who are thinking of somewhere very special indeed to get married, the grounds of the hotel include a very beautiful and private neo-classical chapel.

Whiling away the afternoon in the garden is not the only option available, however. The hotel offers bicycles to tour the by-ways and lanes whilst painting and art classes are held regularly. Those who want to approach the famous Italian cuisine a little more intimately can do so with cooking lessons aimed at all levels.

The decoration of the Villa is soothing and calm with a great deal of attention paid to the fabrics and paintings where exhibitions of Tuscan artists add a touch of colour. In the bedrooms most of the ceilings have exposed wooden beams and terracotta floor tiles with more natural colours in the linen and in the tile-work of the bathrooms.

The Villa Marta would be ideal for a romantic break though the villa is large and there are more than enough possibilities and things to do in the environs that a family would also enjoy its charms.

ll Activities
With lots of stunning countryside all around the Villa, there are plenty of nature-based activities.

From a cultural viewpoint, Pisa (40 minutes) has far more than the Leaning Tower, Baptistery and Cathedral. It is home to one of the most important and prestigious universities in Italy and has a great student life and excellent restaurants. 99% of people who come to Pisa never get beyond the obvious sites leaving the rest of the town free, calm and full of forgotten beauty.

Even closer is Lucca, a short bicycle ride from the villa (3 miles). Once there you will realise that the only way to do this beautiful little town justice is to potter round at an easy pace on foot, stopping to try some of the local dishes here, a glass of fantastic wine there and so on. Luccans are great fans of the bicycle meaning the historic centre is liberated a little from the typical torture by automobile. As well as this, the lack of mass-tourism means you really can explore and get well, well under the skin. Lucca passed through at least 10 different rulers’ hands in the space of a few centuries during those difficult years from 1300 onwards but nevertheless manage to maintain its independence better than most. What we have left then is a combination of Romanesque, Gothic and early Renaissance architecture (the cathedral or Duomo of San Martino expresses this blending best of all) as successive rulers fell over themselves to leave their legacy.
Wonderful food and wine and the fact that Lucca is capital of the province means you can mix this rich history with some excellent opportunities for relaxing, shopping, tasting and catching up with what’s really important in life.

ll Tips & Getting There
By car:

From Motorway A11

Leave the Firenze-mare motorway A11 and exit at LUCCA EST. Follow the blue signs to Pisa which will take you on the SS12. Keep going until after the fork for the village of San Lorenzo a Vaccoli, and about 500m later, turn to “Via del Ponte Guasperini”, a small road on the left side of the main road directing to Pisa. Drive for 400m and you will pass a small bridge, followed by a fork. Keep the left and after about 200m you will see the entrance to the Hotel Albergo Villa Marta on your left hand side.

From Pisa center

Leave the town and follow the signs for Lucca. Once out of town follow the signs for San Giuliano Terme taking the SS12. When you reach the village of San Giuliano Terme, at the foot of the mountains, go straight on, never leaving the SS12 .

You will pass a tunnel and you will be in Lucca’s area. Proceeding to Lucca, you will find the village of Santa Maria del Giudice, pass it remaining on the SS12. Drive for about 3km then turn right toward the small road “Via del Ponte Guasperini” and go straight on. After about 400m you will pass a small bridge followed by a fork. Keep the left and after about 200m you will see the entrance to the Hotel Albergo Villa Marta on your left hand side.
