The hotel’s brochure starts off with an apt quote from Einstein: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle”. Well, in a certain way the Aquapura is a miracle. Bold, design orientated and super hip, it could fit perfectly in any of the world’s great cities – Barcelona, London or Paris would not be a problem – as the sophistication of its modern design using Asian based materials, lacquered woods, steel and resin coated pieces throughout, is top notch.

Yet it is located in the heart of the Douro, one of Portugal’s most beautiful, rural and peaceful regions, as well as a UNESCO world heritage region famous for also being home to Port wine. It is this contrast between style and bucolic location in Vale Abrão that makes it so enticing and, dare we say, miraculous.

It makes the Aquapura a truly unique refuge on the southern banks of the Douro River. Its 50 rooms come in various shapes, sizes and views, but there isn’t one not blessed by the Midas touch of Nini Andrade Silva, renowned the interior decorator. Her good taste is to be found everywhere, even in the fabulous spa where you can get specialised treatment in natural or candle light, surrender to the wonders of yoga, a steam bath or simply enjoy the relaxing water beds. There even has a fully equipped technogym and cardiovascular gymnasium open 24 hours a day.

So as you can see, rural idyll no way precludes sophistication and a design that would not look out of place in some of the worlds greatest metropolises. Except at the Aquapura, you also have natural vistas to die for and you’re in the heart of Port wine country.

Take the A4 Motorway in direction of AMARANTE. Then take on the IP4 in direction of VILA REAL, after afterwards the A24 in direction of VISEU. Exit towards ARMAMAR / VALDIGEM. Turn right in direction of the river and on the first roundabout, carry on over the bridge, turn onto the N22 direction of RESENDE and the Aquapura hotel will appear on the right some 4 km later.
