The Hotel Artus provides a super introduction to Parisian life. In Paris it doesn’t do to walk anywhere without vagabonding a little, especially in the little streets surrounding the hotel which play host to one of the last authentic street-markets. If you really did want to walk in a straight line though and ignore the flower sellers, the patisseries and the wonderful cafés you could make it to Notre Dame in 10 minutes, the Louvres in 8 (assuming you didn’t stop for views on the Pont Neuf) and, if you still had the energy the wonderful Musée d’Orsay in 11. This is the heart of the Left Bank and with the revolutionary spirit still in the air you could of course drop out of classes at the museums, go incognito and pretend to be a local; the hotel sits on a little side-street that runs off the Boulevard Saint-Germain and the surrounding quarter plays host to all kind of impromptu jazz concerts once the flower-sellers and stall-holders have knocked off for the day.
While Rue de Buci dates from the 12th century, the owners redesigned the interior of the hotel (completed in March 2006) and it re-opened to a great fanfare of approval. The use of natural materials helps to create a look that, though chic and modern, retains a sense of familiarity and a wink to the past. Plenty of wood and leather add a touch of club atmosphere whilst the expansive use of Arabesque and Carrara marble in the bathrooms give a clean, light air. The idea in the private areas is to create space and calm while the bar and restaurant use deeper tones to try and make you linger awhile. Don’t worry, breakfast is served late here so if you need a little more time to doze than normal then go ahead and indulge!

Musée d’Orsay Tel 1: +33 (0) 1 40 49 49 78 Tel 2: +33 (0) 1 40 49 40 00 www.musee-orsay.fr
Full price tickets = €7.50 reduced on Sundays to €5.50 and on the first Sunday of each month the museum is free but busy as a consequence! Opening Hours: 9.30am – 6pm (Thursday until 9.45pm). Closed Mondays. For individuals without tickets use entrance A on the left of the façade.
Happy birthday Musée d’Orsay! 2006 marks 20 years since her conversion from the hugely impressive train station Gare d’Orsay and the good news is that the celebrations are continuing into 2007 with a whole selection of special events and exhibitions. Many people will want to come for the standing collections, however, of Western Art between 1848 and 1914 covering the realists, impressionists and a whole lot more besides. The building alone is worth a visit. Monet, Manet, Degas, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gaugain and Seurat are all waiting!
Louvre A hugely resourceful website at www.louvre.fr Full price basic ticket = €8.50 which gives you a day’s entrance to the main areas which to be honest, is more than enough for one day anyway. We recommend buying a Carte Musées et Monuments that comes in a 1 (€18), 3 (€36) or 5 (€54) day format and, apart from giving you access to another 59 Paris museums, means you can also skip the lines which can be horrifically long from March until the end of the summer. Admission to the Louvre is free on the first Sunday of every month but there can be significant queues as a result! Opening Hours: The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Tuesday. On Wednesdays and Fridays it is open until 9.45 pm.
Close to 700 years as the main residence for French Kings and Emperors has left its mark on this wonderful collection of buildings. Now though it is more famous for housing the largest collection of art in the world, some 35,000 works from the 13th century up to 1848 (when the Musée d’Orsay takes over). 200 years as a museum has given the Louvre a bit of a head start in developing its collections and if your interest in paintings by Caravaggio, da Vinci, Rubens, Goya, Constable, Delacroix, Raphael, Rembrandt or Giotto can’t be held then the museum also houses collections of classical art that rival those of the British Museum and the Vatican. Islamic Art, Egyptian and Near Eastern Antiquities can all be found.

The Hotel Artus is bang in the centre and if you’re driving this can be an experience! From the North (Charles de Gaulle Airport for example) follow the A1 direction Paris – Centre, Paris – Porte de la Chapelle and take the exit marked ROUEN, PORTE DE CLIGNANCOURT, PÉRIPHÉRIQUE OUEST. Follow the Boulevard Périphérique for approximately 2km until the exit D111 PORTE DE SAINT-OUEN. You’re now approaching the centre of Paris and essentially go straight ahead for the next 5 km following directions for PLACE DE LA CONCORDE. Cross over the Seine on the PONT DE LA CONCORDE and bear left up the BOULEVARD SAINT-GERMAIN. Rue de Buci is 1.6km on the left hand side.
If arriving by taxi the operation is far easier! From any airport or train station the key phrase for the taxi driver is “Boulevard Saint-Germain, s’il vous plait” followed by Rue de Buci and Hotel Artus.
The hotel has great connections by Métro, MABILLON station on Line 10 is just 100m from the front door, across Boulevard Saint-Germain while ST. GERMAIN-DES-PRÉS on Line 4 is 200m along the Boulevard in the direction of Pont de la Concorde.
