Bed and Breakfast La Romea
Lucca - Lucca - Tuscany
Bed & Breakfast
Number of rooms: 6

Imagine staying in a 14th century “palazzo” in the very heart of the historic centre of Lucca, one of the prettiest and most authentic towns in Tuscany. Throw in 5 beautifully decorated bedrooms, attentive young hosts, Giulio and Gaia and you have one of the best combinations in central Italy. Remains of frescos are found all around the house including the entire ceiling of the suite; if you want to come to Italy to sample a little of the incredible history then there’s no better way of doing it than sleeping under, next to and inside of it. One quick word of warning; La Romea is over six hundred years old and there is no elevator but instead 2 flights of authentically steep stairs! Step outside the front door and the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro (like the Piazza Navona in Rome this is an acient theatre masquerading as the central town piazza) is just 150m away along the cobble streets, the church of Sant’Andrea in front.

The 4 double bedrooms and 1 suite are decorated in different relaxed and subtle colours, nothing too over the top but a long way from minimalist with plenty of natural fabrics and warm tones to really settle in well. Breakfast here has created quite a fan-base and justly so for it bears no resemblance whatsoever to the typical Italian “pastry and run” but is, in itself, a lesson in using the freshest Tuscan ingredients and homemade passion for quality.

All of this has been done in a homely and relaxed manner at very reasonable prices and if you are interested in staying somewhere that can give you a real introduction to a charming Italian town then this is a really good bet. Make the most of your time and stay in the heart of things; Giulio and Gaia go out of their way to help you and are always on hand to offer great insider tips about the best local places to eat and ponder about.

ll Activities
The great thing about Lucca is that once you’ve got there you don’t need a car at all. In fact once you’ve dropped the car off you will realise that the only way to do this beautiful town justice is to potter round at an easy pace on foot, stopping to try some of the local dishes here, a glass of fantastic wine there and so on. In contrast with the majority of Italians, Luccans are big fans of the bicycle meaning the historic centre is liberated a little from the typical torture by automobile. Plan on at least two days here to do it justice, the lack of mass-tourism means you really can explore and get well, well under the skin. Lucca passed through at least 10 different rulers’ hands in the space of a few centuries during those difficult years from 1300 onwards but nevertheless manage to maintain its independence better than most. What we have left then is a combination of Romanesque, Gothic and early Renaissance architecture (the cathedral or Duomo of San Martino expresses this blending best of all) as successive rulers fell over themselves to leave their legacy.
Great food and wine and the fact that Lucca is a provincial capital means that you can mix this wonderful history with great opportunities for relaxing, shopping, tasting and catching up with what’s really important in life.

ll Tips & Getting There
Pisa Airport is now a major hub for many of the low-cost airlines whilst direct flights with British Airways, Iberia, Air France and others are also available to major European cities.
Lucca lies approximately a quarter of the way between Pisa and Florence and easily reached by the A11 motorway, or the more scenic but slightly slower SS12r which leads out of the north-east of Pisa.
Whether driving from Pisa or Florence, you should exit at the appropriately named Lucca exit and follow direction for the “Centro Storico” – the historic centre. Call Giulio and Gaia from this point and they will come to meet you at the arrival point, Piazza S. Maria. Lucca is a medieval walled city that wasn’t built for cars so bear with these next few steps. There are six gates or “Porte” into the historic centre. When you arrive from the highway, keep the walls to your right and continue on this road which circles around the old walls. Called Viale L. Papi, it later changes its name to Viale Carlo del Prete but continue on it all the same, passing Porta S. Anna. At the next gate, Porta S. Donato, where there are also traffic lights, go straight ahead and take the next right through Porta S. Maria where you will enter into Piazza S. Maria and see a Tourist Information Centre. Giulio or Gaia will be waiting for you and your Luccan adventure begins!
