Charming bed & breakfast with panoramic views of Lisbon
Staying directly below Lisbon’s emblematic St George’s castle, with glorious views of the city and the mighty river Tagus sounds a wonderful proposition in itself. That’s exactly what the visitor gets when staying at the bed & breakfast Casa Costa do Castelo, for this is a residence from where many of Lisbon’s sights unfold before your very eyes. Notwithstanding this important point, the house itself also shows a quality born out of extensive renovation work, which has transformed the interior into an uncluttered and tranquil location with a contemporary feel. Comfortable, well-equipped rooms with distinctive wooden panels, double-doors and wooden floors further add to the up- to-date air. The three attic rooms are designed with roof windows and reached by art deco spiral staircases and have fantastic views, whether of Lisbon and its river or the gardens and castle, which rest tantalisingly close just above. The winter garden also doubles as a breakfast room. A word of note, given the layout of the house with its four floors and no lift it may not be particularly suited to people with disabilities. Additionally, though the narrow, winding streets leading to the Alfama and Graça quarters are wonderfully picturesque, parking space is difficult. |

You should plan at least a couple of days to explore the rich variety of lisbons quarters (bairros) and attractions. Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon, going from the walls of São Jorge Castle down to the Tejo. High above the city centre to the west of the Baixa is the so called Bairro Alto. This is the natural place to wind up at night. Well worth a morning or aftenoon stroll to explore.
The Baixa is Europe's first example of Neoclasssical design and urban planning. The lower town is very much the heart of the city and main shopping area. Many of Lisbon's touristic attractions are located in Belém, amongst them are the Jerónimos Monastery, the Monument to the Discoveries, the Torre de Belém, the Belém Cultural Centre and Rua Vieira Portuense. The Belém Cultural Centre (CCB) is known as one of the great cultural centres in Europe, and a building of outstanding architecture: exhibitions, performing arts, restaurants, gardens and shops.
The Parque das Nações, the former EXPO areal, is still worth a visit. Also don't miss the famous Flea Market, Feira da Ladra, which fills the Campo de Santa Clara, at the eastern edge of Alfama on Tuesdays and Saturdays (7am-6pm).
Outside Lisbon there is a lot more to see:
Sintra, a world heritage site, has all the charm of a fairy tale town and was once described by Lord Byron as "the glorious Eden". Sintra has beautiful palaces old residences to visit, particularly the Palácio da Pena, Castelo dos Mouros, Convento dos Capuchos, Palácio da Vila and luxuriant gardens of Monserrate.
Estoril and Cascais can be reached within 20 min. from Lisbon. Estoril was once known as the "Portuguese Rivieira" with grandiose villas and luxury hotels whereas Cascais was an old fishing village with pretty houses by the sea, is now a major resort. Both villages are connected by a beautiful promanade along the coast.
Serra da Arrábida, between Setúbal and Sesimbra is a peaceful nature reserve with its own microclimate that has created unique tree species. There are numerous animals, as well as excellent beaches to enjoy. On the way you can stop at Azeitão, a town renowned for its wines and cheese.
Costa da Caparica
This is athoroughly lively Portuguese resort, with restaurants and summer bars. It is a perfect place to swim or laze around on the sand.
Praia do Guincho
beautifull beach superb place for surfing and windsurfing. |

If you are arriving at Lisbon airport you can either take a taxi or the airport bus. If you are driving yourself be aware that their is limited parking space near the castelo and roads can be narrow and steep.
By taxi from the airport
A taxi from the airport costs between 8 and 12 Euro depending on day or night tariff.
By bus from the airport
Take the AEROBUS to Av. de Libertade, from there on either a Taxi to Costa do Castelo or find your way to Martim Moniz and take the tram No 12 to the direction Castelo. Get off after 2 stops and walk up to Costa do Castelo. If you have to carry luggage or you are with kids its always recommended to take a taxi.

"We had a lovely stay at Casa Costa do Castelo! Excellent accommodations -- wonderful breakfasts -- great coffee! Lisboa is a delightful city and the Casa Costa do Castelo is a delightful place! However, be forwarned there are stairs all over Lisboa and it is a walk-up (top floor) to the Casa Costa do Castelo - yet, Joao was more than helpful in getting our baggage to the top. I only say this since I have bad knees (but knew this going in) bring your knee braces and enjoy. Joao is a delightful host with a sharp sense of humor! **** stars all the way!"
