This is a nice little place. Or should we say palace? Located in a privileged natural spot, it is one with also an interesting history, as it was built in the 16th century, at the height of the discoveries of the New World. Many people from this region made their fortune during these adventures, amongst them the noble Escobar-Jerez lineage, who with their new found wealth and glory built this great little edifice. Since then it has also been the official house of the town governor, a customs house, pharmacy and even hospital for the cavalry. With such history behind it, it took five years to turn the Casa Escobar into the little jewel it is today, one that maintains the original elements of the building and thus keep its charm and personality. Splendid granite façade, groin cross-vaults, stone fronts, granite slab floors, brick vaults, chestnut wood doors, rain tank a stone spiral staircase. In short, a great place space to create an intimate, elegant and charming atmosphere. As for decoration, each room is also individually furnished with travertine marbles, handcrafted furnishings, noble woods and even Egyptian cotton bed linen. As for modern niceties, these include air conditioning (it can get a bit hot in the summer in this part of the world) WI-FI and flat screen TVs. The old world with the new and dashing Escobars and Jerez family would surely approve.

Located far away from the rush of mass-tourism, and within typical countryside of Extremadura, Valencia de Alcántara is a strategically placed border town, where history has left its fingerprint: dolmens, roman ruins, Visigoth traces, synagogues, medieval castles and walled sites. It is also close to Cáceres, Mérida and Évora (in Portugal), all Unesco World Heritage sites.
Among the rich gastronomy of this area, Iberian pork stands out in particular, together with select goat, mutton and beef meats.
The natural surroundings are an open invitation to practice hiking, hunting and fishing. You will also find forests of ancient cork and holm oaks, chestnut and oak trees, rich in natural beauty, fauna and birds.
Being almost on the Spanish-Portuguese border also allows you to enjoy some of Portugal's cosiest villages, such as Marvao and Castelo de Vide. |
