Lovely character in the heart of “Gibraltar in exile” San Roque was established in the early 18th century as an alternative to those wishing to live in Gibraltar under British dominion, and even today its is still known as “Gibraltar in exile”. Add to this slice of history some lovely local architecture and location (here is where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic) and you get a super little town totally unlike many of those ruined throughout the Costa del Sol. The Casa Julio Verne has the added advantage of being right in the heart of the old quarters – a typical Andalusian townhouse restored by owners of undoubted good taste, where you can relax in the cool and fragrant central courtyard, or steam away your aches and pains in the Turkish hammam. The views of Gibraltar and Morocco on the roof terrace are also superb, day or night, and we can’t think of a better way to enjoy them than with a drink in hand. As for the rooms, all are spacious with ensuite bathrooms and are elegantly refurbished. Each comes with many personal touches and mod cons, including hairdryer, bathrobes, high-quality bed linen and a tea and coffee making facility, yet the character of the place with traditional beamed ceilings et al, still shines through.
Casa Julio Verne has a cat but welcomes dogs by prior arrangement. House is unsuitable for younger children.

"Casa Julio Verne absolutely was one of the best experiences we had in Spain. From the warm welcome, excellent breakfast meals, help with travel activities we were made to feel right at home. Rose was an excellent hostess. Casa Julio Verne is comfortable, clean and modern. Located close to Gibraltar, beaches, local tapa bars, etc. Unfortunately for us it rained during our entire stay so we were not able to enjoy the lovely roof top terrace!" KS
