| Just getting to this small 19th century rural house is a pleasure in itself, as it involves passing through some lovely gentle countryside and hills. Once there, however, the visitor will surely not be disappointed. For this is a wonderfully restored accommodation with the added bonus of having some unique characteristics. Firstly, it is slap bang on the Spanish Portuguese border. You can literally come in from the Spanish side and walk out through the other doors onto the magnificent São Mamede Natural Park in Portugal. Not surprisingly, this strategic position has lent it a past connected to the smuggling trade, though nowadays the only persons coming and going are sure to be contented visitors. Inside there is no excess, just good decoration that fits in perfectly with the environment and comfortable rooms with wooden beam ceilings. The charming owners, Eva is a well know dietician in her own right and the vegetarian food on offer bears her own imprint, whilst Joaquín own creations, he is an artist, provides much of the décor to be found in this small and charming house. |

Caceres:
Caceres, a city of Estremadura, lies on a hill and is characterised by its constant evolution in history from Roman times until the present day. Two periods in it development have left their mark on today's city: the Arab stronghold before it fell to the Christians in 1229, and the feudal city between the 14th and 16th C, when it was swamped with palaces and towers of aristocratic families. This urban complex full of its own personality became part of World Heritage in 1986.
Palace of Los Golfines de Arriba or Las Cigueñas Palace. During the 15th and 16th C, the palaces were replaced by magnificent stone houses which differed from the palaces only in size and fewer defensive means. This is the case of Aldana House, El Sol, Ulloa and Carvajal House... In their company, churches and convents were built, such as the Gothic Church of Santa Maria, which has cathedral status, the one of Santiago, which has an important reredos by Berruguete, the one of San Mateo, which was built in the 14th C on the site of a mosque, the Gothic Convent of San Francisco. |

From Lisbon:
Cross the Bridge Vasco da Gama or the Ponte 25 de Abril and follow the A2 highway heading south to the Algarve; approx. 40 km ahead you will find the sign for the A6 Évora /Espanha. Keep on this highway until Estremoz. Once there you will see the signs for Portalegre IP2; once you arrive in Portalegre you will see the sing for Marvão/Castelo de Vide; follow them; near Marvão and before arriving you will see the signs for Spain, follow them. 1 Km before the border make a left heading for Galegos; go to the center of Galegos where you will find the public toilets that should be lighted until late: take the dust road behind these toilets and approx. 1 km ahead you will arrive at “La Fontanera”; the first house on your right painted in Yellow is the Casa Salto de Caballo.
If you are arriving late, please do not ring the bell; give Eva a call (+34 927580865), she lives on the last house and she will come and open the gate for you. |

Very nice house, Eva is a wanderful host (she'll prepare great dinners if you ask her to). Walk to Portugal (it's just on the border) or to any of the Dolmens in the area (do ask Eva for advice!). A very relaxing stay, great place, great area, great money for value. GV, Italy |
