Óbidos is considered by many to be one of Portugal’s most beautiful towns. There’s a medieval fairytale quality to it, the walls and castle jealously protecting its many centuries of history and beauty which, thankfully, remains intact even to this day. So delightful was it that the Kings of Portugal traditionally gave it away as a wedding present to their Queens – hence its moniker as the wedding city. Now any hotel to be found here, and there are only a handful, must fit in perfectly within this dazzling scenario, and so it is the case with Casa Senhoras da Rainha.

Given its location by the ramparts at the foot of the castle, space is relatively at a premium but that does not mean smaller rooms – only less of them (ten in all) which just adds to the feeling of intimacy. The interior is classical and comfortable rather than over the top and rooms, facing the ramparts, and are each individually decorated - notwithstanding some common denominators such as the gilded woodwork and tiled floors. As a nod to the historic legacy all bedrooms are named after Portuguese Queens but location and history aside, there’s another ace up the sleeve – the in house restaurant. Looking out over the courtyard (where you can dine in the summer) and walls of the castle, this eatery is definitely a cut above your average hotel restaurant and your taste buds will feast, literally, on the fresh fish dishes and Mediterranean style cuisine available here. Comfort, tranquillity and history sounds like a good triumvirate to us and the Casa Senhoras da Rainha delivers on all these fronts.

Paradoxically, Obidos’ beauty is also a point of weakness, as it does get a bit crowded in summer with tourists. But even here it maintains its dignity intact, and a place like this, especially when staying in the Casa Senhoras da Rainha, is always well worth a visit whatever the time of the year. It is also necessary to park outside the main entrance to Obidos and walk to the hotel, though once at reception, you can obtain a pass which allows guests into the old town
