The BBC gave the countryside hotel Casal de Loivos the accolade of having one of the 6 best views in the world. This praise is merited for the panorama over the Douro valley from the hilltop where the house stands is simply stunning and all rooms open out to the terrace to take full advantage of it. So impressive is the sight that it is almost easy to forget that the house itself is a beautiful historic place in its own right, full of family heirlooms such as the intriguing vitrines showcasing the owners great great grandmother's clothes, or that guests will be spoiled to the full by the extremely courteous and professional staff. Built in the 17th century it has been in the hands of Manuel Pimentel's family since 1733. Having suffered many years of decay and neglect he set about restoring it in 1991 with much energy. Changes include turning the stables and cellars into the sitting room and five elegant bedrooms, all of which enjoy those glorious views. There is also an adjoining honeymoon suite, which affords greater privacy. Despite the many attractive features of the house, what will stick in the mind will always be those views.

Vila Real:
Town with great religious architecture diversity: Cathedral and São Brás Chapel (Gothic); churches of São Pedro and Misericórdia (16th century), São Dinis (16th-18th centuries) and the Baroque Capela Nova and Clérigos Church. Also worthwhile visiting nearby the city is the famous Mateus Palace, a Baroque masterpiece, where cultural events are currently held.

Sanfins do Douro:
Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade
Carmelite Sanctuary which includes a set of monuments featuring images of the Way of the Cross, sculpted in large dimensions along the route leading to the church. The sanctuary includes a golden engraved altar, a statue of the Virgin Mary with Christ and a statue of a Saint in a glass case.
A celebration is held on the second Sunday in August with a procession of candles and a festive procession.

Parafita:
Sanctuary of Senhor de Parafita
Sanctuary of prayer, established as a result of various miracles attributed to Senhor da Parafita. The eighteenth century sanctuary includes a Chapel and Casa dos Milagres.
The Feast of Senhor Jesus Cristo dos Milagres takes place on August 15.

Vila Nova de Foz Côa
Paleolithic rock art, with encraving s of horses, deer, goats and other animals (some extinct, such as the auroch), as well later neolithic images of people, were found along 17km of the river's steep.

ll	Tips & Getting There

Taking the A4 till Amarante, proceed on the IP4 about 3Km, following then the road to "Mesão Frio" and "Peso da Régua" (N 101). Arriving there, follow the signs to "Pinhão", crossing the bridge over the Douro River and driving in the beautiful road by the river (EN 222)*, till the small town of Pinhão. Cross all the town and at the very end take the road nº 222-3 direction "Favaios" and "Alijó". About 500m after leaving Pinhão on the right side, you will find the road to Casal de Loivos. (7kms always up on a, sometimes, unreal scenery).*The Road 222 is beeing repaired right now so we suggest the two following itineraries
2. route: Taking all the same the A4, proceed on the IP4 till Vila Real, leave the IP4, and get inside of the town. Once there look for the signs to "Sabrosa"(N322) and from there to "Pinhão" and "Casal de Loivos".
3. route: If you choose this route, take again the A4 and IP4 and, about 20 minutes after passing Vila Real (without entering the town); you will find a sign to "Vª Pª de Aguiar" and "Alijó". Obeying these indications and the following ones, in 30 minutes you will arrive in Alijó. Then, follow the road to Favaios, and then to Pinhão, and from there to Casal de Loivos, as instructions on former routes.
