| This 17th century farmhouse Casa de Vilarinho de Sao Romao is located in the peaceful village of the same name and had been in a state of disrepair for some time until the present owners, the Van Zellers, bought it a few years ago. With the help of family members, some of them architects, they set out to renovate the house with a simple brief in mind - to keep the old character of the house intact. In this the years of hard work have paid off, right down to the reproduction of the striking and domed wood ceiling in the dining room - an exact replica of the original - the carvings of the fountain with stone carved dolphins, the stone bowl, not to mention the plane flanked alley leading to the house. All 6 rooms have been carefully thought out and were individually decorated in the best northern Portuguese tradition, hence the rather sober old time atmosphere, stonewalls and wide windows opening onto a typical vineyard landscape. One of the place's other charms is its location. Being right at the centre of the Port Wine country, an area classified by UNESCO as World Heritage, it is the ideal starting point to visit the Douro valley, visit the famous Port wine farms, sail on the river Douro or take the train along the Douro or Tua valleys. On the other hand a stroll through its vineyards, groves and orchards will be a wonderful experience in itself. |

Sanfins do Douro:
Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade
Carmelite Sanctuary which includes a set of monuments featuring images of the Way of the Cross, sculpted in large dimensions along the route leading to the church. The sanctuary includes a golden engraved altar, a statue of the Virgin Mary with Christ and a statue of a Saint in a glass case.
A celebration is held on the second Sunday in August with a procession of candles and a festive procession.
Parafita:
Sanctuary of Senhor de Parafita
Sanctuary of prayer, established as a result of various miracles attributed to Senhor da Parafita. The eighteenth century sanctuary includes a Chapel and Casa dos Milagres.
The Feast of Senhor Jesus Cristo dos Milagres takes place on August 15.
Vila Nova de Foz Côa
Paleolithic rock art, with encraving s of horses, deer, goats and other animals (some extinct, such as the auroch), as well later neolithic images of people, were found along 17km of the river's steep.
Alvão Natural Park
Vila Real:
Town with great religious architectural diversity: Cathedral and São Brás Chapel (Gothic); churches of São Pedro and Misericórdia (16th century), São Dinis (16th-18th centuries) and the Baroque Capela Nova and Clérigos Church. Also worthwhile visiting nearby the city is the famous Mateus Palace, a Baroque masterpiece, where cultural events are currently held.
Bragança:
Majestic city, with medieval castle and walls. Its Domus Municipalis is a unique example of civic Romanesque architecture in Portugal. Special mention must be made to the Cathedral (16th century), Santa Maria Church, Casa da Misericórdia Chapel, Santa Clara Convent and Church (16th century), São Bento Convent and Church (17th-18th centuries), and the Abade de Baçal Museum. At the Railway Museum, 19th century, locomotives and carriages. |

| The house is only some 22km from Vila Real. From take the EN 322 main road passing the world famous Palácio de Mateus. Go until Sabrosa (some 19km). Once in the town head onto the EN 323 in direction of Pinhão. From here it is a further 3 km until the village of Vilarinho de São Romão. The house is to be found to the left of the main road, with its unmistakable gate. |
